Abandoned car sparks Staten Island brush fire

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Multiple Fire Department units responded this afternoon to a brush fire caused by an abandoned vehicle in Ocean Breeze Park. The fire is now out.

Flames were reported at 2:45 p.m. extending towards the grounds of the South Beach Psychiatric Center, but they were cut off by firefighters.

More than six local engines arrived on the scene, including paramedics who were there to respond to any injuries, but none were reported

Firefighters doused the abandoned car for more than an hour before announcing that the blaze was extinguished.

Firefighters walked the area for any remaining hot spots after the brush fire crawled close to the grounds of the South Beach Psychiatric Center.

The fire spread about 200-300 yards into a woodsy area of Ocean Breeze Park.

“Overall it was a safe evolution; we got the fire out quick and no one got hurt,” said Deputy Chief John Calderone of Division 8.

Firefighters were staged at Quintard Street and Olympia Boulevard, at Ocean Breeze Park until it was deemed safe for them for bring their engines closer, to block any possibility of the fire spreading.
